The music was composed on a commission from the musée du Quai Branly in 2002 as the audio component of a touring installation. The installation was made to generate interest and support for the museum which opened in 2004. The installation premiered at the Louvre, the musée de l'Homme, followed by a sister installation in the musée national des Arts d'Afrique et d'Oceanie in Paris. They were on display simultaneously for the summer of 2002 before they departed Paris for other museums throughout France and Europe. Portions of these tracks also appeared in PSAs for the Quai Branly on television and during intermissions in French cinemas leading up to the museum's opening.
